For The Week Ahead

You know, I’m really proud of myself right now. Because after a long day of attending to the house and social obligations, I made myself get into the kitchen and prepare at least two day’s worth of a salad to take with me to work for lunch.

All in the pursuit of health and weight loss.

Plus, I’m just so tired of eating the same thing every single day: a turkey and cheese sandwich with no toppings.

So I turned it into a turkey salad. At least that eliminates eating more bread than I need to. Also, I really like turkey.

I’ve known for quite some time that I have gained plenty of weight.  But getting myself motivated enough to begin a health and fitness plan just never seems to work out for me. I always do fantastic the first week in, refusing any junk food and sticking to a gym schedule, only to utterly fail on the second week.

Plus, something always inevitably comes in the way. Like travelling. Or Ramadan. Or a week saturated with plans, leaving no time to go to the gym or prepare meals.

But I know if I’m going to lose that weight, I have to stop making excuses and dedicate the required time. And that means spending a Sunday evening in the kitchen, chopping up veggies and ensuring that sufficient quantities are made to last for a few days.

It might not be the easiest thing in the world, as I’ve noticed making a salad takes a lot more time than preparing a full-fledged meal. It’s also a lot more difficult finding ingredients that are fresh and of good quality (but that’s another post for another day). Another issue I have is having to toss out vegetables when they go bad- which I absolutely hate doing. We’re only two people in the house and I try as hard as possible to only buy as much as we need- but almost every week ends with throwing something out because it has gone bad.

I’m hoping, though, that dedicating time to meal preparation on Sunday night will reduce, and even eliminate, these problems and help us lead a healthier and happier lifestyle. It seems to be working with setting a meal plan for the week, so why not take it a step further?
