Even though my profession and general interests are far from the advertising world, I have always been curious about this field. I even took an introductory course on the subject during college because I wanted to know how the process goes- and I still remember a huge chunk of it.
And for the past few years, I’ve been trying to attend the popular Night of the AdEaters with little success. This year though, I finally got the chance. As per their website, the event is “dedicated to highlighting the best advertising from over 60 different countries on the big screen in a festive atmosphere.”
I’d say they succeeded at the first one since the ads were far and ranging, covering all sorts of products and causes, some funny, some thought-provoking, but all excellent. I did expect the atmosphere to be more fun though, even though we had goodie bags full with glow-sticks and horns to blow every time an ad we like came on.
The best part is that you can watch a lot of ads in a short period of time, so you get this exposure to these wide and ranging topics presented in very creative ways. And it’s a really nice change from the cheesy and often horrible ads we see on Lebanese television, so it’s good to get ideas (without completely ripping them off).
